Greater Brandywine Village Revitalization, Inc. is a not-for-profit community development corporation committed to rebuilding historic Brandywine Village in northeast Wilmington. A participating Delaware Main Street partner, the organization is leading the effort to create a safe and viable community honoring the Village’s 250 year heritage. The blueprint for our work is the community’s Comprehensive Master Plan, approved by City Council, which addresses housing conditions, real estate development, economic development, commercial revitalization, safety, transportation, quality of life and historic preservation.

REBUILDING  NEIGHBORHOODS – Projects accomplished in 2008:

  • Village Garden at 22nd and Lamotte Streets: The abandoned Tavern has been demolished and a park has been created for the community.
  • Seven new houses are being built by Habitat for Humanity called “Millers’ Row” at 60 to 80 East 22nd Street. They will be completed this summer. GBVR helped secure the transfer of the derelict buildings on the site from the City of Wilmington to Habitat.
  • 104 and 106 East 22nd Street are being rehabilitated by GBVR: The Challenge Program is the General Contractor and they hope to complete them by the fall. We are looking for buyers!
  • Student Housing for Job Corps Students: Working in partnership with the Job Corps, GBVR received a $100,000 grant from the Longwood Foundation to develop several units of student housing on 22nd Street. We expect this project to get underway in 2009.
  • New Street Lights, Sidewalks, and Trees for Carter and Lamotte Streets: Del Dot Tea Phase 4 has been approved and construction is expected to begin in spring. The project is expected to cost $1,000,000, and GBVR worked hard with our elected officials to secure matching funds so that this project could become a reality.
  • Senior Housing available at Lafayette Court: One- bedroom efficiencies apartments are available in the historic buildings at 1803 and 1805 Market Street. Call the Senior Center at 302-651-3460 for more information.
  • “Heart of the Home Kitchen Tour”: The Junior League has renovated the historic Lea Derrickson house at 1801 Market Street. The Junior League has been one of the pioneers in preserving these Mill Owner’s houses and have occupied this property since the 1960s. The house will be open to the public on April 4, 2009 as part of the annual home and kitchen tour. For more information call: 302-652-0544 or online at: www.jrleaguewilm.org.
